Regardless whether a photograph shows an Indian person from Rajasthan, a scene from the civilwar region of Darfur or the snapshot of a streetlife situation in Southafrica – the fascination of all these pictures depends on the personal and oftenintensive encounter between the photographer and the portrayed person and also their culture.

Such a relationship between photographer and his model is mostly rather one-sided. This is why in 2005, Benjamin A. Monn brought the Candela Project into being, with the intention in mind to give something back to the people he photographs, who are often brand marked by life.

The principal goal of this open network is the financial support of worldwide aid-programs by means of the revenues of exhibitions of modern photography, special book-publications and the contribution of artworks to charity auctions.

The supported help-projects are usually discovered and selected by the photographers during their documentation trips to developing countries. Though their direct contact, these Candela-partners are able to convince themselves of the necessity and seriousness of the regional help-projects. Yet, Candela Project also supports larger and already well-established organizations financially and through cooperations.

Further supporters of the Candela project are, Karsten Stormer, photojournalist (e.g. Irak, Dafur, Afghanistan, Somalia) and Sarah von Weitershausen, graphic and book-designer.
